  26. What is the difference between the upgrade and the full version?

  28.      Other than price, there is no difference. The upgrade simply has
  29. an
  30.      extra routine in the setup program which checks your hard drive
  31. for Win
  32.      3.x, WFW, NT, or OS/2 to see if you qualify for the upgrade. If
  33. you are
  34.      installing to a empty hard drive, you can use disk 1 of a
  35. qualifying
  36.      product to prove your eligibility.

  38. Is there any difference between the diskette and CD release?

  40.      Other than a few extra multimedia samples and accessories on the
  41. CD,
  42.      the two are basically identical. If you bought the disk version,

  51.      YES! Don't listen to the media, they are expecting a perfect
  52. product
  53.      from Microsoft and their not going to get it. Nothing is perfect
  54. and
  55.      neither is Windows 95, but it is an excellent product, moving
  56. well
  57.      beyond my expectations.

  59. Now that Windows 95 has been released, what will happen to OS/2?

  61.      OS/2 will never die, but will also never be able to compete with
  62. Win
  63.      95, mainly because of the lack of software for OS/2.

  65. How much RAM is required to run Windows 95?

  67.      The absolute minimum is 4 MB, and despite what you may have
  68. heard,
  69.      Windows 95 will run happily with only 4 megs, but it is
  70. recommended you
  71.      have at least 8. You will notice a major boost in performance

  83.      Yes. I have loaded pre-release copies of Win95 on such a machine

  89.      recommended that you have at least 8 megs if you plan on doing

  91.      heavy multitasking.

  95.      Typical installations take 50-55 MB of hard disk space, for a
  96. full
  97.      install you will need 80 MB. The bare minimum is 20 Megs.

  101.      Yes, Windows 95 is fully backward compatible with Windows 3.1
  102. and so
  103.      you should have no problems running most of your Win 3.x

  119. When installing Windows 95, should I start fresh, installing Windows
  120. 95 in
  121. its own directory or should I install it over my existing windows?
  122.  
  123.      I would recommend installing over your existing windows, but you
  124. can do
  125.      it either way. Keep in mind however, if you install Windows 95
  126. in a new
  127.      directory you will have to reinstall most of your existing
  128. windows
  129.      programs which have stored needed files in your windows
  130. directory(ini
  131.      files, DLL's, etc.). But if you don't mind doing this, Win95
  132. will
  133.      probably run more efficiently if you install fresh.

  135. How can I learn the basics of Windows 95?

  137.      Click on the Start button and go to Help, if you installed it,
  138. you will
  139.      find an on-line users guide. If you didn't, go to
  140. Settings-Control
  141.      Panel-Add New Programs and click on the Windows Setup tab, you
  142. can the
  143.      choose the on-line manual from the list and install it.

  145. Ok, I've got Win95 installed but it's not performing as well as I had
  146. hoped.
  147. Is there anything I can do to increase performance?

  149.      Windows 95 is pretty much self optimizing, so there isn't much
  150. you can
  151.      do short of buying more memory. First of all open the Control
  152. Panel,
  153.      and double-click on the System icon. Once the System applet is
  154. opened,
  155.      click on the performance tab and Win95 will give you suggestions
  156. on
  157.      what you can do to increase performance. Also try defragmenting
  158. your
  159.      hard drive(s) using the included defragmentation
  160.      utility(Programs-Accessories-System Tools). This will greatly
  161. increase
  162.      disk performance.

  164. When I go to the System applet in the Control Panel it tells me I
  165. have less
  166. RAM then I really have. Why does it do this?
  167.  
  168.      This is because you are loading 16 bit drivers in your
  169. config.sys and
  170.      autoexec.bat which is probably not necessary because Win95
  171. includes 32
  172.      bit drivers for most everything. You can delete you config.sys
  173. and
  174.      autoexec.bat unless you have a special video driver or something
  175. which
  176.      must be loaded. The only other program you might want to load in
  177. your
  178.      config.sys/autoexec.bat would be doskey. DO NOT load smartdrv!
  179. It will
  180.      slow down your system and use up valuable memory, Windows 95
  181. includes a
  182.      disk caching utility built in to the operating system, so
  183. smartdrv is
  184.      not necessary.

  186. I want to connect to the Internet using Win95's built in TCP/IP Stack

  188. cant connect properly. Any suggestions?

  200. Isn't Windows 95 a 32 bit operating system?

  202.      You can't run 32 bit clients with a 16 bit TCP/IP stack(such as
  203. Trumpet
  204.      Winsock). You must either use the TCP/IP stack included with
  205. Win95 or a
  206.      different 32 bit stack.

  210.      Yes it comes with a 32 bit FTP client, Telnet client, ping

  212.      a route tracer. These can be found in your windows directory as

  221.      Open the Registry(REGEDIT.EXE in your \WINDOWS directory) and

  223.      (Edit/Find) for My Computer. Once you find it, open subkey
  224. Default Icon
  225.      and modify its vaule to read, file, N, where file is the
  226. complete path
  227.      of the icon (ico, dll, or exe) and N is the icon number
  228. (Remember, the
  229.      first icon is 0, not 1).

  231. Why can't I get the Volume Control utility included with Win95 to
  232. work with
  233. my sound card?

  235.      You have to install one of the sound drivers included with
  236. Windows 95
  237.      or a Win95 specific driver for your sound card. The Sound
  238. Blaster
  239.      driver included with Win95 should work fine with SB compatibles.

  241.      install the driver go to Control Panel-Add New Hardware and
  242. answer no
  243.      when it asks you if you want to auto-detect hardware, then go to
  244.      Creative Labs-Sound Blaster.
